(17th to 20th centuries)
he Renaissance and the beginning of modern times inaugurate an epoch of contrasts, simultaneously a time of disorder and of religious expansion.

While the monastic life knows a certain revival in the 17th century, it is profoundly affected by the Revolution. The possessions of the Church are taken over by the State, which leads to the disbanding of the majority of regular religious establishments.

Becoming nationalised property, the monastic buildings are reutilized to house secular activities or are left unoccupied.
